Mary Conmey
26 Years, 10 Months and 19 Days
DIED—At the residence of Wm. Alspaugh, near Anamosa, Saturday, July 19th, Mary Conmey, aged 26 years, 10 months and 19 days.
The deceased was a native of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, and has resided in Iowa seven years. She has been a teacher in our public schools for three years, and was universally beloved. A year ago last winter she united with the Congregational Church of Anamosa, and up to the time when sickness rendered her helpless she was constantly and actively engaged in Christian usefulness and devotion to the happiness and welfare of others.
Last Thanksgiving day she took cold in Muscatine, was sick thirteen weeks and then came home to waste away by incurable disease, until death should relieve her of her sufferings.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Wm. Lease, in the Congregational Church at 3 P.M., last Sabbath, from a text chosen by herself: "I know that my Redeemer liveth." The sermon was strong yet deeply touching and earnest, and left an impression on the minds of the audience which will not soon be forgotten.
An immense throng attended the services and all could not gain admittance to the Church. A long line of conveyances and footmen attended the remains to the cemetery where the concluding services were held. There in a shady slope where reverential foot-falls are hushed on the beautiful green sward is the last resting place of the earthly remains of Mary Conmey, but her good deeds and her pure and devoted life will live in the memories of her bereaved kindred and sorrowing friends.

Note: There are no dates listed in this newspaper obit, but I have a letter to Mary (addressed to her in Muscatine) from her sister-in-law, dated "Sunday morning, Jan 5th," filled with sorrow about Mary's "severe" illness, begging her to come home so they could take care of her. The postmark on the envelope reads "Jan 24" but I can't ascertain the year!
