Robert D. West, age 83, of Sacramento, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013, after a long illness.
He was born December 18, 1929, in Martelle, Iowa, to Otis LeRoy and Ruth Mae (Tharp) West.
Bob served five years with the U. S. Navy, primarily on the oil tanker, USS Rio Grande, during the Korean War from 1949 to 1954. He was a diesel mechanic for over forty years, working with International Harvester in Davenport, subsequently transferring to and retiring from Ruan Leasing in Sacramento, CA. He enjoyed his leisure time traveling with his wife in their RV and spending time with his family and his cat.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Elgene (Wiese) West, daughters Roberta West of Paradise, CA, Kimberly (West) Benge of Davenport, and son Douglas West of Sacramento,CA. Robert is also survived by his grandchildren, James and Jason West, Angela Stewart, Andrea Haag, Nicholas and Emma Benge and great-grandchildren, Alexis, Camden, and Nicholas; his brothers, Darrell (Doris) West of Onslow and his sisters, Velma Schroeder and Ruth Balster, both of Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edgar, William and Roy West, and his sisters, Nancy Coppess and Jean Roman and a sister who died in infancy.
Friends and family gathered for a formal viewing on February 15, 2013 at the Lind Brothers Funeral Home, 4221 Manzanita Avenue, Carmichael, CA. Interment will follow at a later date at Sacramento Valley National Military Cemetery in Dixon, CA.
