STEVE HANKEN: This is the other side of First Street from the Lovell block (previous card). The building that is immediately on the corner has some interesting history and is one of the older buildings in town. My understanding is the second floor was used extensively for social functions, especially dances. Supposedly the floor was spring loaded to protect the building and give a little lift to the dancers! The Monticello Community Building can be seen further down the block and the tower holds the hand wound clock that formerly was in the High School bell tower above the opera house. The photo was taken from the roof of the old Monticello Bank building. Judging from the amount of traffic, it looks to have been taken on a Saturday night when the country folks would come into town and do their shopping and visiting on First Street. |
