Born August 28, 1824
JOHN CLARK, contractor and builder, Monticello; is a native of Mercer Co., Penn., and was born August 28, 1824; he grew up to manhood there and learned the trade of carpenter and joiner; in 1855, he came West to Iowa, and located in Jones Co., and engaged in farming, and was one of the earliest settlers in Wayne Township; he continued farming twelve years, then came to Monticello and engaged in contracting and building; he has erected some of the best buildings here, among others the Public School Building, one of the finest in the State; Kinsella's store, and many others; in 1877, he built the house where he now lives, one of the finest private residences in the county; while living in Wayne Township, he held town and school offices. He married Miss Maria Joslyn, a native of New York State; they have two daughters—Emma and Fannie; Emma, now Mrs. Brazee, of Minnesota, is acknowledged by judges of music to be the most accomplished pianist in the State; Fannie is at home.
