J. H. Whitney
Born 1834
J. H. WHITNEY, farmer, Hale Twp., Sec. 36; P.O. Clarence; born in New Hampshire in 1834; came to Ohio, then to New York, and, in 1855, to Iowa; owns 140 acres, and has made all the improvements; has been Road Supervisor, Township Collector two terms, and School Director two terms; he enlisted, August 12, 1861, in the 9th I.V.I.; discharged May 30, 1862, for disability. His wife, Rebecca J. Furgeson, was born in Indiana in 1830; came to Iowa in 1854; married in 1864; have two children—Hiram E. and Rosella K. Mrs. Whitney had six children by a former marriage; all are dead except two—Ida F. (now Mrs. R. B. Elijah, of Cedar Co.), Ada F. (now Rev. Mrs. T. P. Blair, of Marengo, Iowa).
