The reading on this page, provided by the Jones County Genealogy Society, was transcribed by Joanne Wilken. Many of these tombstones are gone. Maiden names and burial dates are in parenthesis.

The records for Bowen's Prairie Cemetery are incomplete (especially in the 1854/56 time frame). Bill Corbin has been replacing some of the wooden markers with very nice new wooden markers.

Photo: Joan Tallman, 13 February 2003

In addition to the burials listed below, there are two memorial markers in the cemetery for people buried elsewhere:
Alfred Denson, April 24, 1838, 6 years
Hugh Bowen, March 19, 1804–February 15, 1865
Blackhawk War, buried in Colorado.

30 yrs 11 mos 10 days—w/o Soloman Hayden. (Marvin Miller writes: "Her obituary (printed in an unknown newspaper) says she died of Bright's disease. Solomon subsequently remarried two more times, in 1858 to Mrs. Lucy Petty (she died) and in 1869 to Miss Ann Watkins. As for the spelling of Solomon, his name is spelled in the US and Iowa censuses as both Soloman and Solomon. However, when spelling really counted, in his and his childrens' obituaries and his land deeds, it was always spelled as Solomon."

Note from :
I have two dates for Margaret's birth. Her 1866 marriage certificate says she was 20 years, 11 months, 0 days old. That would place her birth at May 19, 1845. The other source is a family bible that lists her birth as May 27, 1844, but a note mentions a daughter, Ida Belle Davis, gave that information. Margaret did not have a daughter named Ida nor one married to a Davis. Her eldest was Ora Belle who married a Dearborn, but that is the closest. Also, her death date on the wooden marker has the incorrect month as she died in March, not May, per the death notice published in The Manchester Press on March 17, 1882, and an article under the Sand Springs news, page 3, dated March 14, 1882.
Note from Carol Evans:
Correct date of birth is May 27, 1844. Ida Belle Davis is daughter of Margaret's sister, Sarah Patterson McVay (husband Henry H. McVay). Ida Belle is listed as his daughter in Obituary. Wm. Patterson, brother of Margaret and Sarah, is my great—grandfather. If interested I have much info on Patterson family.
