The 1854 census included columns for "Colored Males" and "Colored Females," but none were listed for any of the townships.
MONTICELLO FACTS: This township, named after the home of Jefferson, is one of the northern tier of townships of the county, east of Castle Grove, the northwest township. The South Fork of the Maquoketa River enters the township near the northwest corner, runs diagonally across, and leaves the township some two miles north of the southeast corner. The Kitty Creek, a stream of considerable importance, enters the township from the south and unites with the Maquoketa near the city of Monticello. By means of these two streams and others flowing into them, the township is well watered, and water-power, for mill purposes, furnished the inhabitants. |

1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | 2 | Jill Orcutt, gr-gr-granddaughter of Isaac Orcutt, writes: "I believe the Widow Orcutt to be Susanna Orcutt, mother of Isaac, Joseph, Stephen, Henrietta, and Ella. The male listed with her would be Isaac, age 25. He married Emily Downer in Dec 1854. Susanna's husband died in Indiana, and I have traced Susanna and Isaac from Indiana to Iowa through the censuses. The 1850 US Census for Michigan lists Susanna and Isaac, and 1860 and 1870 US Census for Iowa, Jones County, list Susanna living in the same household as William and Henrietta Rearick, Henrietta being her daughter."
