Andrew Byerly was of Swiss German origin. He was a Lutheran fleeing Catholic
persecution in his homeland. He arrived in Philadelphia on the "Charming
Nancy" on 9 Nov 1738, at the age of 23. He was a baker, cook, carpenter,
gun trader, inn keeper, ranger and frontier scout. He established the post
at Bushy Run, known as Byerly Station and participated in the French and
Indian War, serving with Washington.7,8
