A. Jirah Ballou; Corbitt calls him "Jerry Ballou," he is in the 1856 Iowa Census as "Jerah," and I think he is most likely the "Jira" or "Jera" Ballou who appears in 1840 census in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York. He was born circa 1790 at New Hampshire.³ He married an unknown person. He removed to Iowa in 1852.⁴

1. Andrew Ballou was buried at Olin Cemetery, Rome, Jones, Iowa.⁵ He was born circa 1830 at New York.³ He removed to Michigan between 1852 and 1854 then to Iowa according to the 1879 county history, but Corbitt says he moved to Iowa in 1852 in Frank's biography and in 1850 in Simeon's. The 1856 census shows Andrew, Asa and their father, "Jerah," all living in Iowa for 2 years.^6,7,3 He married Philisia Valira Cole on 10 May 1856 at Jones, Iowa.⁸ He and Philisia Valira Cole appeared on the census of 11 June 1860 at Union Grove P.O., Hale, Jones, Iowa; Andrew "Bolond," 28, farmer, real estate=$1000, personal estate=$600, born New York; "Filice," 25, born New York. At home were Hiram, 3, and Sarah Jane, 2.⁹ In 1879 he is listed in the county history as a Republican and Religious Liberal.¹⁰ He and Philisia Valira Cole appeared on the census of 7 June 1880 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Andrew, 56, farmer, born New York, parents born New Hampshire; Felissa, 48, keeping house, born Ohio, father born New York, mother Ohio. At home were: Phoeba, 17; Jesse, 16; Simeon, 14; Andrew, 12; Charles, 9. All children attended school.¹¹ He died on 22 January 1905 at Jones, Iowa.¹²

c. Phoebe Ballou was born circa 1860 at Iowa.¹³ She married Charles H. Gardner, son of S. H. Gardner and Esther Heath, on 25 December at Residence of Harry Duntz, Olin, Jones, Iowa.¹⁴ She and Charles H. Gardner appeared on the census of 1925 at Olin, Jones, Iowa; Charles, 67, manufacturing/mechanical, owned home free, value=$7000, third grade education, Protestant; Phoebe, 64, rural sixth grade education, Protestant.¹⁵

(1) Emilou Gardner was born circa 1887 at Jones, Iowa. She married William Crawford, son of Charles Crawford and Flora Lombard. She and William Crawford appeared on the census of 1925 at Olin, Jones, Iowa; William, 48, rent=$15, education=grade 8, protestant; Emilou, 38, education=rural school 8, protestant. At home was William C., 10.¹⁶

(2) Earl Gardner was born circa 1899 at Kansas.¹⁷ He appeared on the census of 1920 at Rome, Jones, Iowa; Laborer, oat mill, lived with parents.¹⁷

(3) Frank W. Gardner was born circa 1902 at Iowa.¹⁸ He married June Gilland, daughter of C. Gilland and Griffith. He and June Gilland appeared on the census of 1925 at Olin, Jones, Iowa; Frank, 23, transportation, education=grade 10, protestant; June, 17, education=grade 8, protestant.¹⁹

d. Jesse Ballou was born circa 1862 at Jones, Iowa.¹³ He married Martha M. Southwick, daughter of G. P. Southwick and Mary Prinzel, on 15 November 1883 at Anamosa, Jones, Iowa; C. W. Gardner, witness, John G Vannes, Min.²⁰ He was Farmer on 4 May 1885 at Rome, Jones, Iowa.²¹ He and Martha M. Southwick appeared on the census of 1895 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Jesse, farmer. At home were Lloyd and Nita.²²

(1) Lloyd Ballou was born on 4 May 1885 at Rome, Jones, Iowa.²³ He married Hattie F. Lathrop, daughter of Howard Lathrop and Ida Phillips. He and Hattie F. Lathrop appeared on the census of 1920 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Lloyd, farmer, owned/mortgaged farm #25; At home were JH, Bert, Merl, ----?----. Hatties parents were born in Iowa.²⁴

(a) J. H. Ballou was born in 1907 at Iowa.²⁴ His oldest son is Kenneth Ballou, born November 19, 1929 in Jones, Iowa.

Carter, daughter of James Carter and Rhoda Benadom, on 19 September 1886 at Anamosa, Jones, Iowa; Andrew Ballou, Witness, D Russell, Minister.²⁷ He and Melissa C. Carter appeared on the census of 1895 at Rome, Jones, Iowa; Simeon, farmer, German Reform Church; Enumerated .with family was John Frank, 13, born Jackson, Iowa.²⁸ He and Melissa C. f. Andrew Ballou was born in February 1868 at Jones, Iowa.²⁹ He resided in 1886 at Jones, Iowa; farmer.²⁹ He married Maggie M. Duntz circa 1894. He and Maggie M. Duntz appeared on the census of 1900 at Rome, Jones, Iowa; Andrew, farmer, parents born in New York.³⁰

(1) Earl F. Ballou was born on 3 January 1896 at Mechanicsville, Iowa.^30,31 He married Beula Marguerite Harrison, daughter of Ernest Wyant HARRISON and Liona Levisa WALBRIDGE, on 6 December 1917 at Anamosa, Iowa.³² He appeared on the census of 1920; Rome/Laborer on father's farm.¹⁷ He and Beula Marguerite Harrison resided in 1924 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois.³³ He died on 24 October 1982 at Yucaipa, California, at age 86.

g. Charles Ballou was born circa 1871 at Jones, Iowa.³⁶ He married Henrietta Vernon, daughter of Edward Vernon and Ellen Fisher, on 4 October 1893 at Olin, Jones, Iowa; witness, E. R. Vernon.³⁷ He resided on 20 December 1894 at Jones, Iowa; farmer.³⁸ He and Henrietta Vernon appeared on the census of 1895 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Charles, farmer, Christian. Ralph at home.³⁹ He and Henrietta Vernon appeared on the census of 29 April 1910 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Charles, 39, farmer, owned free, married 16 years, father and mother born New York; Henrietta, 34, 2 births, 2 children living, father and mother born Ohio. At home were Ralph and Irma.⁴⁰ He and Henrietta Vernon appeared on the census of 15 January 1920 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Charles, farmer, owned free farm #73. Irma at home.⁴¹ He appeared on the census of 1925; Charles, 59, 8th grade education, Christian; Henrietta, 49, 8th grade education, Christian. At home was "Lize" (Irma) at home.⁴²

(1) Ralph W. Ballou married Edna E. Huston, daughter of Charles Huston and Lora Norris. He was born on 20 December 1894 at Iowa.³⁸ He and Edna E. Huston appeared on the census of 1920 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Ralph, farm labor, rented; Edna, parents born Iowa. At home were Charles & Norris.⁴³ He and Edna E. Huston appeared on the census of 1925 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Ralph, 30, 9th grade education, Christian; Edna, 29, 8th grade education, Christian. At home were Cedric, Merlyn and Lola.⁴⁴

Asa Ballou was born on 29 January 1835 at New York.⁴⁷ He married Randilla Bachelor at Cedar, Iowa; listed in index as AS Ballows and Randilla Batchella.⁴⁸ He and Randilla Bachelor appeared on the census of 25 June 1870 at Wyoming P.O., Hale, Jones, Iowa; Asa, 32, farmer; real estate=$2000, personal estate=$1600, born New York; Dilla, 25, keeping house, born Vermont. At home were: Hosea, 10; Franklin, 8; Amanda, 5; and, Susanna, 2/12.⁴⁹ He and Randilla Bachelor appeared on the census of 16 June 1880 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Asa, 45, farmer, born New York, parents born New Hampshire; Dilla, 35, keeping house, she and parents born New Hampshire. At home were: Hosea, 20; Frank, 18; Amanda, 15; Sussana, 10; James, 7; and, Daisy, 5. All children except Hosea attended school. Enumerated with the family was Edward Urnplry, 22, hired hand, born Iowa.⁵⁰ He died in July 1897 at Clarence, Cedar, Iowa, at age 62.⁴⁷

a. Hosea Ballou was born in April 1860 at Jones, Iowa.^51,52 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; lived with parents.³⁶ He married Maria A. Schaaf on 11 December 1880 at Henry Duntz residence, Jones, Iowa; witness: John H. Duntz, official: Jessie Finch, J.P.⁵³ He and Maria A. Schaaf appeared on the census of 1885 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Hosea, farmer; Maria, parents foreign-born. At home was Frank.⁵¹ He resided in 1910 at Clarence, Cedar, Iowa.⁴⁷

(1) Franklin A. Ballou was born in October 1882 at Jones, Iowa.^51,52 He married Bessie B. Phillips, daughter of G. A Phillips and Helene Smith. He and Bessie B. Phillips appeared on the census of 4 May 1910 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Franklin, 27, farmer, married 1 year, parents born Iowa; Bessie, 26, no children.⁴⁰ He and Bessie B. Phillips appeared on the census of 1925 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Franklin, 42, professional, college graduate, Baptist; Bessie, 41, 11th grade education, Baptist. At home were Paul and Howard.⁵⁴

(a) Paul Phillip Ballou was born on 28 January 1911 at Jones, Iowa.⁵⁵

(b) Howard Loverne Ballou was born on 20 November 1914 at Jones, Iowa.⁵⁶

b. Frank P. Ballou was born on 17 April 1862 at Hale, Jones, Iowa.⁴⁷ He married Mary E. Hammond, daughter of Shadrach Hammond and Emeline Kimball, on 23 December 1882 at Oxford, Jones, Iowa; Witness: S. Hammond, Official: John McLeod, JP.⁵⁸ He and Mary E. Hammond appeared on the census of 1885 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Frank, farmer.⁵¹ He and Mary E. Hammond appeared on the census of 1895 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Frank, farmer, Free Will Baptist. Enumerated with the family was Otis Eyka, 25, born Ohio, farm hand.⁵⁷

(1) Hosea Virgil Ballou was born on 21 February 1885 at Hale, Jones, Iowa.⁵⁹ He married Myrtle May McClure, daughter of Erasmus McClure and Mary Morton, in 1907 at Jones, Iowa.^60,40 He and Myrtle May McClure appeared on the census of 18 April 1910 at Hale, Jones, Iowa; Virgil H., 25, farmer, rented, married 3 years; Myrtle, 24, 1 birth, 1 child living, parents born in Iowa.⁴⁰

(a) Velma Jane Ballou was also known as Velma June.⁴⁷ She was born on 6 June 1909 at Jones, Iowa.⁶¹

(2) Perry Ballou was born circa 1887.⁵⁷ He married Maude L. Slife in 1908.⁴⁰ He and Maude L. Slife appeared on the census of 18 April 1910; Perry, 23, married 2 years; Maude, 24, no children, father born Ohio, mother Illinois. Enumerated with brother Virgil.⁴⁰

B. Barnabas Ballou was born circa 1797 at Richmond, New Hampshire.⁷⁰ He married Rachel Bowen on 12 September 1816 at Richmond, New Hampshire.⁷¹ He died circa 1844 at Armada, Macomb, Michigan.⁷¹

1. Silas Warren Ballou was born circa 1820; Gravestone says "ae 41." He married Mary Jane Smith.⁷² He died on 4 August 1861 at Cedar, Iowa; Mary Ann McCutcheon's information says 1 Aug 1861.^73,74 He was buried at Diamond Cemetery, Hale, Jones, Iowa.⁷³

a. Emily D. Ballou was born circa 1845.⁷³ She died on 5 May 1862 at Iowa; at age 17 of tuberculosis. Mary Ann McCutcheon says age 18.^74,73 She was buried at Diamond Cemetery, Hale, Jones, Iowa.⁷³

b. William Ballou was born circa 1847 at Michigan.⁷⁵ He married Keziah Bunn.⁷⁴ He and Keziah Bunn appeared on the census of 24 August 1870 at Massillon, Cedar, Iowa; William, 23, farmer, personal estate=$1050, born Michigan; Kezia, 21, keeping house, born England. At home was Zora, 3/12, born February, 1870. The ages of all the children born within the past year were given in the number of full months as of June 1, 1870. Enumerated with the family was Alfred Ballou, 19, farm labor, born Illinois.⁷⁶

(1) Zora Ballou was born in February 1870 at Massillon, Cedar, Iowa; The name in the census sure looked like "Zora," but that doesn't match any of the names provided by Mary Ann McCutcheon. I will double check next time I visit the library.⁷⁷

Alfred Ballou was born circa 1851 at Illinois.⁷⁸ He married Arella Unknown.⁷⁹ He and Arella Unknown appeared on the census of 5 June 1880 at Massillon, Cedar, Iowa; Alfred E., 28, farmer, born Illinois; Arella, 24, keeping house, born New York, parents born New York. At home were: Viola, 5; Susan, 3; and, Lydia 7/12. All children born in Iowa. Enumerated with the family was James Goulty, 15, farm hand, born Missouri.⁸⁰
