Susan Matilda Axline Cooper Wells

Death of Mrs. Wells

Mrs. Susan Matilda Wells died last Friday at her home in this city. She was 65 years, three months and 23 days old, having been born in Ohio, December 27, 1851 Her maiden name was Axiline. A husband and a number of children survive. The funeral was conducted Sunday at the Methodist Episcopal church, by Rev. L. C. Lemon, and the remains were taken to Madison cemetery for interment.
While yet a child the deceased removed with her parents to Missouri. At the age of 18 years she came to this county, and remained a resident until her death. She was married to L. L. Wells May 30, 1875. Eleven children were born to them of which the following survive Mrs. McMurrin of Anamosa, Charles Wells of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Sadie Shaffer of Anamosa, Eddie J. Wells, and Leslie R. Wells of Cedar Rapids, and William Wells of Anamosa. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and brothers and sisters as follows. Joseph Axiline of Anamosa, Jessie Axiline of Oelwein, Sadie Cocholour of Morley, Alice Mines of Independence, and Ollie Wilkins of Olin. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church early in life, and when death overtook her she was fortified with belief in her Savior and the hope of eternal life.

Note: Susan's maiden name was Axline, not Axiline. She married, first, S. R. Cooper on September 22, 1874 at her parents home in Jones county. She married, second, Levi L. Wells on May 1, 1877 in Madison township, Jones county. (R.H.)
