Irene O. Thordsen, 93, of Monmouth, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Monticello, Iowa.
A celebration of Irene's life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, November 2, 2013, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 to 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center. Burial will be at the Monmouth, Iowa Cemetery.
Irene Olga Bartels was born on September 1, 1920 in rural Jackson County, Iowa, to Henry and Christina (Behrens) Bartels. She grew up near Nashville and attended Jackson County country schools. She married LaVern E. Thordsen on October 7, 1942 in Lost Nation, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2002.
In her early years, Irene had worked for neighbors doing cleaning and chores. Upon her marriage, she became a homemaker and farmed with her husband, first near Lost Nation until 1956 when they moved to rural Monmouth.
Irene enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers, her cats and dogs, and watching the birds. She was an excellent cook who was known for her bread and holiday meals. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Those left to honor Irene's memory include her children, Maureen (John) Childears of Stapleton, Nebraska, Donna (Roger) Patton of Coggon, and Darrell (Lori) Thordsen of Monmouth; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son LaVern, Jr., two brothers Harry and Carl, and a sister Velma.
