Lorraine Bickerstaff Barger
January 27, 1925 – October 18, 2017
Lorraine Barger, 92, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at St. Luke’s Unity Point Hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, where friends called from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Monday. Interment was in the Green Center Cemetery, Morley. Pastor Karen Nelson officiated at the services.
Survivors are her son, Terry and his wife, Linda, of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Naomi, of Mukilteo, Washington; six grandchildren, Ben, Zeke, Molly, Alicia and Josh (Andrea) Barger and Tara (Chad) Yuza; five great-grandchildren, Sydnee Johnson, Madison and Zach Yuza, and Brooke and Emily Barger; sister-in-law, Wanda Bartilson and nephew, Bob (Sherri) Wageman and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph, and son, Curt in November 16, 2016.
Lorraine Bickerstaff was born January 27, 1925, in Morley. She was the daughter of Harlan and Ruth (Clark) Bickerstaff. Lorraine graduated from Morley Community High School in 1943. She worked as a secretary at the Iowa Men’s Reformatory in Anamosa. Lorraine Bickerstaff and Ralph Barger were married on October 21, 1950, at Galena, Illinois.
Lorraine and Ralph purchased her family’s grocery store in Morley; they were the third generation to own the business and operated the store for twenty years. In 1970, Lorraine and Ralph changed careers and opened Barger Insurance Agency in Morley, where Lorraine was the secretary. The operated the business until 1997 when they retired.
Lorraine was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the Ugolgo Club, the Anamosa Camera Club and was very active in the Morley community with Ralph. She was always proud to have been a member of the Morley girls’ basketball team, a member of the band and also the baton twirler.
Lorraine and Ralph loved to go dancing. They also played Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for years for all the children in the area. As Mrs. Claus, Lorraine used her love of cooking and baking to make treats for all the children they saw through the Christmas season.
