Ernest V. Burroughs
April 10, 1878 – November 20, 1921
Ernest V. Burroughs was born in Greenfield township, Jones county, Iowa. April 10, 1878, and died at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Nov. 20, 1921. following an operation for appendicitis the previous Sunday.
He was united in marriage to Goldie W Mershon, June 30, 1904 and they lived happily together in Morley until his death. For some years he worked as a carpenter with his uncles K. V. Miller and W. L. Miller and more recently had run a gang of carpenters in and around Morley. During the past season he was employed by the J. W. Hopp Const. Co. who had the contract for the erection of the new Consolidated School building in his home town. The forenoon of the Saturday before his death "Ernie,". as he was better known, helped lay tlie last of the flooring, but complntneil of pains. At noon he called Dr. Young of Martelle but the latter was unable to relieve him and the next morning advised that be be taken at once to a hospital for operation. Still not even his closest relatives realized his danger for he seemed so strong and healthy. The disease, however, had progressed further than anyone had suspected and be never rallied after his operation, altho able to converse with visitors and apparently glad to see relatives and friends who came to see him. The ensuing Saturday morning, after sleeping rather more than usual, he quietly passed away. His wife and brother Arthur were at his bed side at the last but Lon did not arrive until the suffering soul had flown to a world where there is no pain.
The body was brought back to Morley where funeral services were held on the following Tuesday, after which interment was made at Forest Chapel beside the deceased's only child who died in infancy.
While yet a boy Ernest united with the church of the United Brethern and in his daily life always tried to keep the spirit as well as the letter of the teachings of Christ. His name is written not only on the roll of the Morley church book but also on the hearts of many with whom he worked or mingled in the days spent in our midst. After serving as Director of the old Morley Sub-district he was elected as a member of tlie first Board of Directors of the Consolidated District at that place In 1919 and until his death he continued to work faithfully in this capacity. Whether in church, in the public school, or in any other movement for the good of the community, he was always ready to take an active part.
Mr Burroughs is survived by bis wife, Goldle W of Morley, by his parents Mr and Mrs. A. C. Burroughs, to whom be has been a next door neighbor and a thoughtful and devoted, son and by the following brothers, Arthur K. of Cedar Rapids, George II of Mechanicsville; Thomas O. of California, Roger of Marion, and Alonzo N. of Anamosa.
