Ellen Douglas Telfair
July 15, 1815–January 30, 1894
Mrs. Ellen Telfair died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. J. B. Smith, at 7 o'clock p. m., Tuesday, January 30th, 1894. Mrs. Telfair was born in Bond Brook, N. J., July 15, 1815. Her maiden name was Ellen Douglas. She was married in 1836, to James A. Telfair, who with his family removed to the then quite small village of Davenport, Iowa Territory, in the year 1842, where he died in August, 1856. Mrs. Telfair has continued as a resident of Iowa ever since. She was a member of the Baptist church more than sixty years of her life. Mrs. Telfair was a woman of more than ordinary energy of character, and as a friend was loyal and true in every way. Her affection as a wife and mother could not have been surpassed. She had four children, two of whom survive, Mrs. Dora Muhs, who lives in Camanche, Iowa, and Mrs. J. B. Smith of this place. The last two years of her life were passed in great suffering, from the disease that carried her off.
