John Archie Holmes
January 10, 1912–March 14, 2009
John Archie Holmes, 97, of Olin, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Services were Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Olin United Methodist Church with Reverend Pat Slater presiding. Burial followed in the Wyoming Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lahey Funeral Home in Olin. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids was in charge of arrangements.
John was born January 10, 1912 in rural St. Louis County, near St. Louis, Missouri the son of Ray Eli and Mary Agnes (Armstrong) Holmes. He attended Cornell College following his schooling at Olin Consolidated High School. John married Freda Kathryn Levsen on January 10, 1934 in Tipton. John farmed for over 37 years in rural Jones County between Olin and Wyoming.
John was a member of the K. P. Lodge, the Masons, and the Wyoming Horseshow Board. He served as Olin Mayor for two years. He was a State Representative for Jones County from 1965-1967 and served as the Jones County Democratic Party Chairman.
John is survived by his wife Freda, a daughter Mary (Ron) Andrews of Birmingham, Alabama, a son Jerry (Diane) Holmes of Paris, Missouri, daughters Jane (Don) Cox of Marion and Marty (Don) Berner of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren Kathy Andrews and David Andrews of Shawnee, Colorado, Alan Holmes of Alexandria, Virginia, Christine (Terry) Brosh of Solon, Dan (Teresa) Cox of Mt. Vernon, Tammy (Brandon) Pitlik of Mt. Vernon, Teresa (Luke) McDermott of Melbourne, Florida, Tosha (Daron) Rubner of Mt. Vernon, Doug Berner of Lisbon and Dustin Berner of Cedar Rapids; eleven great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Cecilia Flaherty.
