Laura Henrietta Holst Reiss

Laura H. Reiss of Onslow died Thursday, January 18, 2007, at the Anamosa Care Center, Anamosa, at the age of 95 years.
Laura Henrietta Holst was born on October 28, 1911 in Scotch Grove Township near Onslow, Iowa. She was the daughter of Nicholas C. and Toni (Rohwedder) Holst. She attended country school and graduated from Onslow High School in 1929 and from Iowa State College in Ames in 1933. She taught Home Economics in Stanwood and Eagle Grove, Iowa. She then served as an Iowa State Extension Home Economist in Butler, Bremer and Benton Counties.
On September 10, 1944, she and Calvin Reiss of Vinton, Iowa were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. They lived in Vinton until 1946 when they moved to Laura’s parent’s farm near Onslow and started farming in partnership with her parents until 1954. They later took over the operation of the farm until they retired in 1974 and moved to Onslow.
Laura was a long time member of the Onslow Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and was an active member of the Onslow Christian Service Guild. She was a 4-H Club leader and served on the County 4-H Committee. She also served two terms on the State 4-H Committee. She was an honorary member of the Altrurian Federated Women’s Club of Onslow.
She is survived by her husband, Calvin Reiss of Onslow; one daughter, Marie (William) Hacke of Center Junction; 3 grandchildren, Rodney (Kelli) Hacke, Andy (Susan) Hacke and Jennifer Hacke. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Arianna and Mariah Hacke and Paige and Will Hacke. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Elsie.
