Bernita Lee DeWoody, 70, of Olin, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
A celebration of her life was held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Olin Methodist Church in Olin, with Pastor Pat Slater officiating.
Friday called from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lahey Funeral Home in Olin. Burial was in the Olin Cemetery, Olin, Iowa.
Bernita was born December 15, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Hazel (Miles) Houston. She grew up in the Buck Creek area and graduated from Buck Creek High School in 1956. After graduation she worked for Iowa National in Cedar Rapids.
She married Carl Lee DeWoody on September 11, 1959, at the Buck Creek Methodist Church in Buck Creek, Iowa.
Benita worked as a legal secretary for many years and then as a bank teller for the Olin Bank until retirement. She was a member of the Olin United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Carl DeWoody, one daughter, Carrie (Paul) Fortin, and two granddaughters, Amy and Libby Fortin, all of Olin; two sisters, Dora McBride of Cedar Rapids and Jeanette (Mike) Saunders of Ryan; one brother, Arthur (Viola) Houston and a sister-in-law, Joyce Houston, both of Monticello.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Donna Schrodermier, two brothers, Virgil and Vern Houston, and her beloved son, Lance in 1985.
