Marvin H. Klahn Sr.
January 30, 1924–January 26, 2014
Marvin H. Klahn, Sr., 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Friday, January 31, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplin Mike Salgenweit-Coffman. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post #727. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include his sons, Marvin H. Klahn, Jr., Solon, and William L. "Bill" Klahn of Cedar Rapids, grandchildren William, Matthew (Jackie) Sam and Elizabeth "Liz" and great granddaughter, Hanna. Marvin Sr., was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arline; and sisters, Betty (Raymond) Brenamen.
Marvin was born January 30, 1924, in Toronto, the son of Harold "Swede" and Emma (Fisher) Klahn. He graduated from Oxford Junction High School in 1942, and joined the Coast Guard, serving in Greenland for four years.
Upon his discharge he returned to Iowa and worked on the family farm. On October 11, 1946, he was united in marriage to Arline Edward. She died in 2010. Marvin worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring in 1982, after thirty-three years.
Marvin was a catcher at his high school and in city leagues and was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, golfing, collecting stamps, and coins, and he and his wife liked dancing and metal detecting.
