Henry G. Matejka, Jr., 82, of Olin, passed away on July 31, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital.
A memorial service, including Masonic services, were held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Brenda S. Ehret of the Unity Center of Cedar Rapids officiated. Burial with military honors followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, friends joined the family for a party to celebrate connection with Henry at the Cedar Rapids El Kahir Shrine Center.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Sue; his children, David (Cory) Matejka of Cedar Rapids, Katie (Bob) Hansen of Center Point and Elsa (Kevin) Hirl of Olin; grandchildren, Michael (Myra) Matejka, Nichole (Billy) Vogl, Jesika and Jordan Hansen; Collin, Madison, Dawson and Adam Hirl; great grandchildren, Connor, Logan and Brennan Klein and Ayla Matejak; sisters, Evelyn Wieneke and Grace Kimbrough; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mildred Pernicka and Dorothy Sauter.
Henry George Matejka, Jr., was born to Henry Sr. and Artha Mabel (Sitt) Matejka on June 5, 1930, in Cedar Rapids. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War and through his service maintained a high sense of pride in his country throughout his life. He worked for Smith's Transfer for over twenty years in trucking management. He was united in marriage to L. Sue (Herr) Hauschild on July 22, 1991 at Unity Center. Henry was a collector of antique tractors and cars and enjoyed his time on his small farm. He and Sue delighted in dancing, singing and traveling together. Above all, he loved being with his family. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his boisterous and loving personality and gentlemanly manner.
Henry was involved with many organizations in the area and held various positions within them. They include: The Unity Center of Cedar Rapids, VFW, American Legion, Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge #263 where he was Past Master and received his fifty year membership certificate, Ancient Landmark Lodge #200 in Olin, Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, the York Rite, the El Kahir Shrine where he was Past Potentate, Elks Club, Cedar Rapids Executive Breakfast Club, Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Delta Nu Alpha Fraternity, Cedar Rapids and Marion Transportation Club and the University of Iowa President's Club.
