Veronica I. Maternach Welter

Veronica I. Welter, 90, of rural Onslow, died Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade, Iowa.
Friends and relatives of Veronica called from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service was held at 3 p.m. Funeral Services were held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Temple Hill, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, with Rev. Neil Maternach officiating. Concelebrating with Rev. Douglas Loecke, Eucharistic Minister was Joan Turnis. Lectors were Jaclyn McDermott and Jennifer Welter. Petitions were read by Kayleen Turnis. Placing of the pall was done by Ann Turnis, Joan Turnis, Connie Singletary, Julie Shay, and Karen Knepper. Giftbearers were Linda Turnis, Hannah Welter, Marie Knepper and Abby Welter. Burial was held at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Temple Hill, Iowa.
Casket bearers were Alan Turnis, Jacob Welter, Keegan Shay, David Turnis, Ross Singletary and Nolan Shay.
Veronica was born on May 15, 1926, in rural Monticello, daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Kelchen) Maternach. She received her education at the former St. Mary’s School in Cascade. On September 21, 1948, she was united in marriage to Herman Welter, Jr., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cascade. Together they farmed in the rural Onslow area, raised thirteen children, and operated their family business, Welter Seed and Honey Company. Veronica enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking, quilting, square dancing, and spending time with family.
She is survived by her children; Mel (Rita) Welter of Monticello, Ann (Wayne) Turnis of Dubuque, Dan Welter of Onslow, Les Welter of Onslow, Herb (Paula) Welter of Lincoln, Nebraska, Joan (Mike) Turnis of Bernard, Ken Welter of Onslow, Jim (Denise) Welter of Onslow, Connie (Mark) Singletary of Colleyville, Texas, Julie (Pat) Shay of Ankeny, and Karen (Scott) Knepper of Cascade; twenty-seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five brothers and four sisters, Katie Rockzein of Anamosa, Joe (JoAnn) Maternach of Cascade, Ralph (Rita) Maternach of Cascade, Loras (Donna) Maternach of Masonville, Joan (Tom) Hoffmann, Ron (Bridget) Maternach, Muriel (Duane) Schlemme, Lois (Alan) Gravel, Lester (Mary Ellen) Maternach all of Cascade; one brother-in-law, Clarence Quint of Manchester; one sister-in-law, Lois Maternach of Cascade; one step-sister, Jeanette Callahan; and step-brother, Dorrance (Pat) Manders, both of Dubuque.
Veronica was preceded in death by her husband Herman in 2005, her son Gary in 1989, her son Alan in 2013, her parents, her step-mother Mildred (Manders) Maternach; five sisters Florence Schockemoehl, Eleanor Quint, Alvina Greif, Eva MacKlocke and Sr. Irmina (Leona) Maternach OSF, one brother, Larry Maternach, brothers-in-law, Harry Schockemoehl, Robert Greif, Elmer Klocke, Harry Rockzein; step-brother, Donald Manders; step sister-in-law, Mary Manders; and step brother-in-law, Jack Callahan.
