Nick Frank Nassif Sr.

Nick Frank Nassif Sr., 94, of Anamosa, Iowa, passed away Friday August 12, 2016, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Valentine’s Day, 1922 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the eldest child of four, to parents Frank and Rose Nassif. He grew up there with siblings Marie, Eugene and Wilma and graduated from McKinley High School. During his early years, Nick learned the trade of shoe repair from his uncle, which eventually became his life-long career. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving 3 years in North Africa and Europe. Upon his return, Nick opened a family shoe store and repair department, “Nick’s Shoe Clinic,” in Anamosa, and became a Main Street fixture for over 40 years. Nick married his beloved wife, Helen Lorene (Lorry), in 1950 and they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June.
Nick was the epitome of small town life involvement, having served on or led many community organizations. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #4 for over 60 years, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and President, Planning and Zoning Commission Board Member and Chairperson for 18 years, member of the VFW and Past Commander of the American Legion of which he was a member for over 71 years. He was an active member of the Veterans Honor Guard, honoring fallen veterans with the 21 gun salute, until his final years.
But Nick’s passion and dedication was most evident as a member of the Anamosa Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. He served as assistant fire chief, secretary-treasurer and president of the association. He received the Governor’s Award, “Iowa Firefighter of the Year,” in 2002. Other awards bestowed on Nick include Anamosa Volunteer of the Year in 1991, Anamosa Distinguished Citizen Award in 1997, Grand Marshall of the Annual Anamosa Pumpkin Festival and Parade in 2003, Honorary Fire Chief and Mayor, and Honorary Life Membership of Anamosa and National American Legion. Nick was a long-time member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. God – Country – Family. This was Nick’s legacy.
Nick is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Lorry, and children Nick Nassif, Jr. Steven Nassif, Brian Nassif (Julie), all of Anamosa, and Karen Lauterbach (Dennis) of West Des Moines; also grandchildren Danielle Woerth (Brian) of Ames, Cassie Marks (Joel) of West Des Moines, Janelle Reule (Korey) of North Liberty, Alycia Maxwell (Tom) of Central City, Chelsea Feldpouch (Troy) of Norwalk, Mike Nassif (Jill) of Cedar Rapids and Cody Lauterbach (Lisa) of St. Louis, MO. Additionally, there are 10 great-grandchildren that loved being teased by their Jidi. Nick is also survived by brother Eugene Nassif, Sr. (Sandy) of Cedar Rapids and sisters Marie Bojrab of Ft. Wayne, IN and Wilma Easton (Robert) of Cedar Rapids; also many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Rose, infant granddaughter Angela Nassif, son-in-law Jerry Paterson, brother-in-law Isaac Bojrab, and cousin Harold Abdo.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Wednesday morning, August 17, 2016 at, St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church Cedar Rapids with burial in the St. George Cemetery. Fr. Fred Shaheen will officiate at the services. A public visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Tuesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa where a Trisagion Service will be held at 7:15. Visitation will resume on Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the church until 11:00.
