George D. Owen, 88, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Monday, September 17, 2012, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.
A celebration of George's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2012, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors.
George Darrell Owen was born on September 29, 1923 in Clay Mills, Iowa, to Hiland and Helena (Schneckloth) Owen. He was raised in Maquoketa and attended Maquoketa schools prior to entering the military where he served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
He married Lorraine Busch at midnight on September 9, 1944 in South Mills, North Carolina.
Upon receiving his honorable discharge, George and Lorraine lived in DeWitt where George worked for the DeWitt Coop. They then moved to Maquoketa where George worked at the Buckhorn Creamery for several years. He then worked for the Iowa Highway Commission and lastly in the maintenance department at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa until his retirement. He was also the co-owner of G & D Owen Laundromat for twenty-five years.
George was a member of the Maquoketa American Legion Post #75 and the Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O'Connor-Regenwether. He also was a fifty-year member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Maquoketa.
George was known as a general handyman who could fix anything. He enjoyed gardening, puzzles and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George is survived by his wife, Lorraine Owen of Maquoketa, Iowa; a son Doug (Jeanne) Owen of Maquoketa, Iowa; two grandchildren, Melissa (Steve) Bormann of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Chad (Sara) Owen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and four great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Brandon, Ani and Nora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson, Brent Douglas Owen, four brothers, Harold, Ralph, Delbert and Louis and two sisters, Mildred Bock and Camilla Skott.
