Robert F. Plattenberger
November 15, 1921 – June 9, 2018
Robert F. Plattenberger, 96, of Martelle died Saturday, June 9, 2018, surrounded by family.
As a citizen, Robert was quietly attentive; as a son, dutiful; as a husband, loving and constant; as a father and grandfather, patient and kind; as a friend, loyal. His presence enhanced his community. In short, he was as honest a man as ever God with his image blest.
The celebration of life service was held 10 a.m. Sunday, June 17, 2018, at the Martelle United Methodist Church, with Pastor Sue Ellen Sherman and Pastor Carla Burge officiating. A visitation and lunch followed the service. A private burial was at the Mount Vernon Cemetery. The Beatty-Petersiem Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
On November 15, 1921, Robert was born at home in rural Mount Vernon to Leila (Barr) and Luther Plattenberger. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1940 and attended Iowa State University. Robert was united in marriage with Roberta Mae Wilson on February 18, 1945, in Mount Vernon. They made their home in Martelle where they farmed the rest of their lives.
Robert was an avid reader. When reading became too difficult, he listened to hundreds of talking books from the Commission for the Blind. He enjoyed his grandchildren, traveling and fishing. He was a longtime member of the Martelle United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Margaret Sadeghpour-Kramer (Monte) of Mount Vernon, Marilyn Bauch (Jared) of Traer, Dr. Robin Plattenberger-Gilmore (Richard) of Washington; sister, Mary Carol Lambertsen of Anamosa; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Roberta on January 2, 2013; daughter, Barbara on September 27, 2009; and one grandson, Robert.
