Evelyn Steffens Dean
April 6, 1919 – January 20, 2018
Evelyn (Steffens) Dean, 98, formerly of Olin, died peacefully in the presence of family on January 20, 2018, at Anamosa Care Center. Services were held Monday, January 29, at 11 a.m. at the Olin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Wood officiating. A visitation preceded the service beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial was in Olin Cemetery.
Evelyn was born to August and Alma (Ehmke) Steffens on April 6, 1919, near Clarence. She was baptized and confirmed at the former St. John’s Evangelical Church in Clarence. Evelyn graduated from Clarence High School in 1936 and married James Lawrence Dean on February 14, 1941, at Delhi. She assisted her husband on the farm near Olin, where they lived for twenty-nine years. After moving into the town of Olin, she was employed by Olin School for fifteen years before retiring.
Evelyn was a member of the Olin United Methodist Church for seventy-six years, where she taught Sunday school and was a choir member. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, as well as other social clubs. She enjoyed spending time with her family, music, crafts, and nature.
She is survived by her sons, James (Marilyn) Dean of Maquoketa, Dennis (Marilyn) Dean of Urbandale, and Douglas (Patricia) Dean of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, James (Kate Braun) Dean, Terry Dean, Malinda (Jeff) Caldwell, Jennifer Dean, Kevin (Alanna Shaikh) Dean, Jessica (Carlos) Estrada, Brandon (Ashley) Dean, Elizabeth (Tim) Orsund, and Aaron (Katherine) Dean; twenty great-grandchildren, Megan Dean, Andrew Dean, Michaela Brino-Dean, Tylor Brino-Dean, Jack Caldwell, Sage Caldwell, Taja Caldwell, Zachary Dean, Samuel Dean, Lucas Estrada, Nicholas Estrada, Carter Dean, Micah Dean, Dylan Orsund, Natalie Orsund, Zachary Orsund, Emma Dean, Lindsey Dean, Colin Dean, and Owen Dean; one brother, Delbert Steffens, Winfield, and two sisters-in-law, Darlene Steffens, Oxford Junction, and Dorothy Dean, Marshfield, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, her parents, two brothers, four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a great-granddaughter, Lily Orsund.
