Laurabelle Mae Strake Rutenbeck
March 11, 1933 – April 30, 2016
Laurabelle Mae “Auntie” Rutenbeck, 83, of Maquoketa, passed away on Saturday morning, April 30, 2016, at the West Wing Place in DeWitt.
A memorial service celebrating Laurabelle’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 5, from the Elwood United Methodist Church in Elwood, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Elwood, Iowa, Cemetery.
Laurabelle Mae Strake was born on March 11, 1933 in Wyoming, Iowa, to Joe and Velma (Shimerda) Straka. She was a 1951 graduate of Oxford Junction High School. She married Eldon Rutenbeck on March 22, 1956, in Oxford Junction, Iowa.
Laurabelle had worked at the Citizens State Bank in Wyoming, Iowa, for five years then farmed with her husband for many years in the Elwood area. She was a member of the Elwood United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Pearless Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Oxford Junction.
Laurabelle loved to work outside, especially mowing her yard, and baking chocolate chip cookies. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes basketball fan, and she and her husband would winter in Texas for a month every year.
Those left to honor Laurabelle’s memory include many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, and many great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces; and sister-in-law Delores Rutenbeck of DeWitt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eldon on October 19, 2009, and sister-in-law Joann Schoenthaler.
