Richard “Dick” Switzer, 89, of Anamosa died Monday, November 11, 2019, at the Anamosa Care Center. A private graveside service will be held for the family at a later date. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is assisting the family. Richard D. Switzer was born April 30, 1930, in Anamosa the son of Mervin and Laura (Hora) Switzer. He graduated from the Morley High School class of 1947. He married Martha Hayes, and the couple later divorced. In the late 1950s, he and his brother Jack started Switzer Brothers Construction. Together they built quality homes throughout Jones County. He retired in the late 1990s. He enjoyed spending time fishing, camping, and being a back-seat golfer by giving advice while others golfed. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, especially women’s basketball. He was also a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and was recruited by the Chicago Cubs to play major league ball in the late 1940s. Those remembering him include nieces and nephews, Craig (Renee) Smith, Sondra Friedrichsen, Kevin (Laurie) Smith, Vicky (Russ) Kadolph, Jeff (Barb) Switzer and Jed Switzer; a sister-in-law, Ruth Switzer; a son, Michael Switzer; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mervin and Laura; a brother, Jack; a sister, Betty Smith; a brother-in-law, Duane Smith; and a nephew-in-law, Merlin Friedrichsen. He will be remembered as a hard-working, fun loving, sometimes stubborn, always lovable, genuine person. The family would like to express special thanks to Darrel Hora, Richard’s friends at Anamosa Senior Housing, Above and Beyond and the staff at the Anamosa Care Center for taking such great care of him.
