Velma Jane West Schroeder Rasmussen
August 16, 1927 – January 2, 2017
Velma J. West (Rasmussen) Schroeder, 89, of Maquoketa, Iowa passed away on Monday morning, January 2, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Iowa.
A celebration of Velma’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m., January 7, 2017, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Friends and family will gather immediately following the services at St. Mark’s Hall in Maquoketa for fellowship and a time of sharing. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date in the South Mineral Cemetery, rural Onslow, Iowa.
Velma Jane West was born on August 16, 1927 in Martelle, Iowa to Roy Lee and Ruth Mae (Tharp) West. She was a 1945 graduate of Onslow High School. She married Leslie Schroeder in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death. She married Otto Rasmussen in Maquoketa, Iowa. He preceded her in death.
Velma had worked at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa on the crank line for over thirty years. She then worked at General Foods for over five years and Fastex in Maquoketa. Lastly she worked at Pacific Coast Feather in Maquoketa for several years.
Velma was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Maquoketa and the St. Mark’s Women’s Guild. She enjoyed gardening, genealogy and crocheting.
Those left to honor Velma’s memory include her children, Patti (Jeff) Schaeffer of Anamosa, Richard (Joanne) Schroeder of Hinesville, Georgia, Bill (Shirley) Schroeder of Knob Noster, Missouri and Randy West of Maquoketa; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren; a brother Darrell (Doris) West of Onslow; a sister-in-law, Pat West of Ravenna, Ohio; a sister-in-law Elgene West of Sacramento, California and former daughters-in-law, Ilse Arellano of Paradise, California and Estelle Harper of Maquoketa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leslie and her husband Otto, brothers, Henry, William, Roylee and Bob, sisters, Jean Roman, Nancy Coppess and Ruth Balster, and a son Jim Schroeder.
