J. W. Benedom Aug. 12, 1862 Steve Hanken: "Seems there is a bit of a difference in the names, the 'Soldiers and Sailors' site of the National Park Service says the name is James W. Benedom; but the GAR roster for Wyoming says his name is Dr. Josephus White Benadom, who was born in Ohio and died in Monticello, Iowa in 1933. I discovered his grave on Find a Grave in Mt. Joy Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa. Interestingly, Benadom was cremated and in 1933 that was a bit unusual, but Benadom the 'Doctor' was quite the charlatan and had 'Sanitariums' as far away as Denver, Colorado, claiming he could cure cancer and most anything! He apparently was a fifer in the Civil War and later in life tamed a wild robin to sit on the end of his fife as he played while marching in a fife and drum corps he put together of family members. He was also know for his homemade marquetry, building inlaid tables with thousands of pieces of wood. It is said he even made a snare drum this way. Back in my early days of Boy Scouts we had to make money for the troop and often put out fliers in the town of Monticello. His spooky old sanitarium was still standing, but falling down, a victim of a fight over the estate, I presume. It used to creep me out! The old boy died after a couple of characters thumped him over the head for his wallet, it didn't kill him, but he died later on the front porch of his sanitarium as a result. No one was ever caught."
Richard Harrison: "Josephus White Benadom (1843-1933) and James Sylvester Benadom (1845-1916) were brothers, sons of William and Martha Byerly Benadom, and both are listed in Jones County GAR records. James eventually moved to Maquoketa where he died and is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. His listing on Find A Grave says 'Co. E, 31st. Iowa Infantry,' but there is no citation."

Emerson, Harvey Transferred to 17th Iowa and mustered out. Buried at Olin city cemetery Olin Iowa. His age when he died was 21 and he died right after the war ended. When you look on the rosters it says his home was Davenport, but that may have been where he enlisted, since he is buried at Olin. I want to add him to the Jones County veterans of the Civil War list, He shows up on the census for 1860 as a brother to Charles in Rome Township Census on 24 July 1860. They are buried very close to each other so I have to think these are both Jones County Veterans in spite of what the roster says. Photo: Steve Hanken

Kohout, Jos. Aug. 14, 1862 According to his mothers obituary (Monticello Express, January 20, 1887), Joseph died in 1876 from disease contracted while in service. No place of burial was given. The Kohout family appears to be from Bohemia and Catholic, but in 1876 I would imagine the Catholic cemetery north of Monticello probably had not been created yet, and no grave is mentioned in the records. The Catholic church used to be on the hill above Carpenter school in Monticello. It was dis-assembled and made into a home. I wonder if the church yard was the cemetery at one time? (Steve Hanken)
